Objectiu de la convocatòria
The EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships support postdoctoral researchers by promoting international mobility and enabling work in a new country or host laboratory. The programme is open to researchers in Europe (and globally as part of EMBO's network) and focus on high-quality research in the life sciences.
Característiques principals
Applications are expected to be driven by a biological question, explore the mechanisms behind biological phenomena and yield biological insight, rather than remaining at the descriptive or observational level. Mechanistic insight may involve molecules, but can also involve higher levels of organization, such as cells, tissues, organisms, populations or ecosystems. Projects with an aim to develop an application, commercial product or process, or a device may be considered if a fundamental biology question behind the project is to be answered.

Applications are accepted throughout the year and enter one of two evaluation cycles depending on the time of submission.
  • Spring deadline: fourth Friday of January, 14:00 CET
  • Autumn deadline: second Friday of July, 14:00 CEST
    • Requisits
  • Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent at the start of the fellowship.
  • Applicants ho already hold a PhD are eligible only if they obtained it within the two years prior to the application submission date; exceptions apply in cases of specific career breaks.
  • Applicants must have at least one first (or co-first) author primary research paper published or accepted in a peer-reviewed international journal at the time of application. For manuscripts in "accepted" or equivalent status, an editorial acceptance letter confirming both status and authorship must be provided.
  • All applications must involve international mobility.
  • Applications to return to the country where the PhD was obtained are not eligible.
  • Applications to laboratories where the candidate has previously worked for more than six months (in one or multiple visits) are not eligible.
  • Applications to the PhD laboratory or to work again with the PhD supervisor are not eligible.
  • Candidates who have already started working in the host laboratory are eligible only if they have been there for less than six months at the time of application.
  • Only one application per candidate per selection round is allowed. Reapplication is allowed only once.
  • Projects that are a direct continuation of the PhD are not eligible.
  • Each host laboratory may support only one application per selection round and is defined as a single research unit led by an independent group leader with their own funding.

    The fellowship includes a salary or stipend, travel and relocation allowance, and support for fellows with children. Awardees can attend an EMBO Laboratory Leadership course and become part of the global network of EMBO Fellows.
