This program is designed to support investigators planning to pursue a career in diabetes-related clinical research. Awards are made in the later stages of training and are intended to facilitate transition to independent faculty or research appointments.

Requisits
  • This award is intended for clinical researchers in the early stages of their independent careers, within five years of their first faculty-level appointment at the time of submission. Applicants must hold an MD, MD-PhD, DO, or PsyD, have an appointment or joint appointment in a subspecialty of clinical medicine within a clinical department, and conduct human clinical research. In exceptional cases, non-MD applicants may be considered if their work is expected to make a significant contribution to clinical outcomes.
  • Each applicant must be sponsored by a full-time investigator affiliated with an accredited institution, who is actively engaged in clinical research and agrees to supervise the applicant's training. The sponsor is not required to have expertise in diabetes; however, the proposed research project must be directly related to type 1 diabetes and be patient-oriented.
  • Fellowship research may be conducted at domestic or international institutions, including for-profit and nonprofit organizations, as well as public and private entities such as universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, and units of state or local government, and eligible federal agencies.

    Applications must be submitted through the RMS360 online system and must include a research plan, a future career plan statement, a training plan statement prepared by the sponsor, a department head statement, and three letters of recommendation.
