Objectiu de la convocatòria
The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) was created by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) to provide funding initiatives in all areas of diabetes research. The aims of EFSD are to encourage and support research in the field of diabetes, to rapidly diffuse acquired knowledge and to facilitate its application.
AstraZeneca is a global pharmaceutical organisation commited to innovative solutions that support patients, physicians and healthcare systems to address the global burden of diabetes.
Característiques principals
EFSD has established this European Diabetes Research Programme in Cellular Plasticity Underlaying the Pathophysiology of Type 2 Diabetes to stimulate and accelerate European research and encourage projects aimed at advancing current knowledge in this field.
While it is recognised that type 2 diabetes is the consequence of inadequate beta cell function in the face of insulin resistance, the underlying molecular defects remain elusive. Recent results have implicated cellular plasticity in the disease process, with partial or complete dedifferentiation of beta cells and insulin target cells. A more complete understanding of such cellular plasticity in type 2 diabetes and the potential for its reversibility may lead to the development of a novel therapy.
Particularly welcome are projects studying the effect of GLP-1 and DPP4 inhibition on cellular plasticity and recovery of beta cell function.
