HFSP postdoctoral fellowships encourage early career scientists to broaden their research skills by moving into new areas of study while working in a new country.

Two different fellowships are available:
  • Long-Term Fellowships (LTF) are for applicants with a PhD on a biological topic who want to embark on a novel and frontier project focussing on the life sciences.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF) are for applicants who hold a doctoral degree from a non-biological discipline (e.g. physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or computer sciences) and who have not worked in the life sciences before.

    HFSPO member countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus (EU part only), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. South Africa is in the process of joining as full member at the beginning of 2023 and hence the call is fully applicable to this country as new member of the organization.
    Requisits
  • A candidate who is not a national from one of the supporting countries (see list) may apply to work only in a research institution in one of the supporting countries. A candidate who is a national of one of the supporting countries can apply to work in a research institution in any country.

  • A doctoral degree (usually a PhD) must be conferred by the start of the fellowship and by December 31, 2024 at the latest, but is not required at the time of application.
  • If already conferred, the doctoral degree must have been conferred within 3 years prior to the submission deadline of the Full Proposal, i.e. between September 28, 2020 and September 28, 2023.
  • The “conferral date“ of the official doctorate documentation will be taken as the date of conferral.
  • Applicants must have at least one lead author publication by the submission deadline of the Letter of Inent, which can be a manuscript (i) published in a recognized OA preprint repository , or, (ii) accepted for publication, (iii) in press or (iv) already published by a peer reviewed journal.

    • Dotació
    The value of the allowance is based on the country in which the fellowship is carried out. For Spain, the allowances are:
  • Living allowance: EUR 51,132 (1st year), EUR 51,984 (2nd year), EUR 52,836 (3rd year)
  • Annual research and travel allowance: EUR 6,432
  • Annual child allowance (per child): EUR 5,113
    • Durada
    Up to 3 years, with no possibility for renewal.
    Fellows may interrupt HFSPO support after having completed at least one year of the HFSP fellowship. During a deferral period, fellows may spend up to one year in a different laboratory at the same or another university/institution or up to six months in another research-driven, innovation environment, in both cases working on the HFSP-funded project.
    In the third year of the fellowship, fellows may choose to continue work in the host laboratory, to return to their or their spouse’s/partner’s home country, or to move to another HFSPO member country.
    Fellows must begin their fellowship by activating it between April 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025.
    AVÍS IMPORTANT
    Applications for the 2024 HFSP Long-Term and Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (to start in 2024) will follow a two-step submission process via the online submission platform ProposalCentral. Firstly, applicants will be asked to submit a Letter of Intent from which the review committee will select the best proposals. In a second step, successful applicants will be invited to submit a Full Proposal.
